First Post

In this blog, I intend to explore the St. Louis area in a somewhat unusual way: one zip code at a time. I have a map of the St. Louis area with zip codes demarcated, which inspired me to try to eat at one restaurant in each one.

I have three goals for this blog. First, I want to promote exploration of St. Louis for people who live here but may not see much of it, specifically my fellow students at Washington University (who tend to live mainly in a bubble consisting of campus, the Delmar Loop, and the Central West End). Second, I want to promote interesting things about St. Louis to people who aren't from here and may visit. When people think of visiting St. Louis, they may think primarily of the Arch, the zoo, and the Cardinals, but not much else. I'd like to change that. (While I intend to be primarily positive about the St. Louis area, I won't refrain from criticism where criticism is due.)
Third, I've lived on or not far from the Mississippi River my whole life (in Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, and Minnesota), and I'd like to eventually write a book about the river valley. Exploring St. Louis will provide material for that portion of my eventual book, if I ever get around to writing it.

With each post, I intend to talk about one zip code in the St. Louis area: its area, characteristics, architecture, history, quirky things about it, and at least one restaurant I've visited in it.
